Broadening Support for Gay Parents in Surrey

Gay Surrey is extremely proud that the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) are supporting gay parents in Surrey . By establishing contacts with the NCT Haslemere, Midhurst and District Branch, Gay Surrey is now working with Samantha Hannay, their Postnatal Co-ordinator and Early Days Leader to develop ways in which the two organisations can broaden support for gay parents living in the area.

“The NCT has a policy of supporting all parents and I was delighted that two lesbian mums joined one of my Early Days courses with their 5-month old babies. Making sure our services are available to all parents is very important to me and I put a lot of emphasis on ensuring the mums in my group feel comfortable and open to sharing their experiences of parenting without feeling judged, whatever their situation,” says Samantha.

Positive Parenting Event

Gay Surrey is offering a new exciting course with the help of Samantha who would be the facilitator. Similar in format to the Early Days course, this will be a 4-week discussion group for parents with toddlers/pre-schoolers, focusing on issues such as:

•  Changing relationships
•  Discipline and managing tantrums
•  Balancing family life (work, partner, children)
•  Beginning school life (preparing for bullying / coming out – or not – to teachers/other parents)

The course will consist of one 2-hour session each week, 7.30pm to 9.30pm, starting in October 2008. It will be held in the Haslemere area and places cost £80 per person and include refreshments, information and access to a resource library.
