Crimestoppers - in gay surrey

Who we are
Crimestoppers is an independent national charity. We are not part of the police, a government body or television programme. We provide a national phone number 0800 555 111 and online secure form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org for people to use to anonymously give us criminal information that we pass straight to the police for them to take the appropriate action. Our call centres, staffed by trained call handlers, are open 24/7 taking information from callers who for a variety of reasons do not want to contact the police direct.

We are not an alternative way of contacting the police we are an anonymous way of getting information through to the police. Our aim is to help the police in their work by providing them with valuable information, that without our assistance they would not receive, from people who are not coming forward and talking to them direct.

Our guarantee of anonymity
We don't ask for your name, we don't record the calls, we cannot trace the calls. We don't note your gender, your age or your accent. If you inadvertently give us any personal information we will ignore it. All information is checked/sanitised before we pass it real time straight through to the police. We have been operating in the U.K. for the last 21 years and have never compromised the anonymity of a caller.

When should you call Crimestoppers?
We would advise you that it is better to call the police direct if you have information regarding criminal activity. This allows the police to ask you detailed questions, they can call you back, visit you, they can take your statement and more importantly they can use you as a witness in court if necessary. If information is received through Crimestoppers none of that can happen. Once you hang up - that is it – no one will know who it was who made the call.

Anecdotally, and we do not ask why a caller has used us, there are a variety of reasons for calling us rather than the police direct e.g.

  • The fear of retribution
  • The worry of being “named” as the one who told the police.
  • Compromised employment
  • Too close, a relative or a friend of a friend
  • Personal circumstance at that moment, too busy at work, going on holiday next day.
  • The main reason is that the caller just does not want to get involved.

Crimestoppers is a very successful service helping the police to make more and more arrest every year. Nationally over a million actionable calls have been received. 19 arrests are made each day as a result of Crimestoppers information.

Crimestoppers on the Web
More and more people are giving information these days through our online secure form on the home page of our web site www.crimestoppers-uk.org . The website pages are now available in several languages.

So whether it is hate crime or any type of crime remember if you do not want to talk directly to the police but have quality information that they would be interested in then contact Crimestoppers. Crimestoppers will then pass the information you gave about crime onto the Police anonymously on your behalf.

“Just tell us what you know, not who you are. Call about crime anonymously”

We also have ShadowCS at www.shadowcs.co.uk for 11 -16 year olds that addresses issues specifically of interest to them. ShadowCS has advice pages, facts about the law, chat rooms, competitions, games and much more.
